Wisconsin football fans know that Camp Randall Stadium under the lights feels different. A Saturday spent preparing for a primetime matchup in Madison gets the whole city buzzing (apologies for the double entendre). Add the fanfare of a ranked Badgers team welcoming another ranked Big Ten opponent, and you have a recipe for a night that will not soon be forgotten. According to a report, Wisconsin football fans may be in store for such a night this upcoming season.

Wisconsin Football to Host Ohio State Football in Primetime

According to Ryan Glasspiegel of the New York Post, UW will play in primetime when hosting Ohio State on October 28th. NBC will televise the Big Ten matchup.

The Badgers last hosted the Buckeyes in 2016. That game was also a primetime matchup. #8 Wisconsin welcomed a #2 Ohio State football team led by quarterback JT Barrett. Badgers QB Alex Hornibrook and running back Corey Clement led UW in a valiant effort – holding a lead as late as 4:00 remaining in the 4th quarter. However, an Ohio State touchdown in overtime and a Wisconsin drive that sputtered at the OSU four-yard line dashed the Badgers’ hopes of defeating the Buckeyes for the first time since 2010. That 2010 game – another primetime matchup – remains the last time Wisconsin football defeated Ohio State.

Assuming that Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day has his team in usual form this season, the game will be the first time since 2016 that Wisconsin football has hosted a ranked opponent in primetime. That last occurrence, however, was not the 2016 matchup against Ohio State. Two weeks after UW hosted OSU in 2016, the #11 Badgers welcomed #7 Nebraska to Madison. On the same night as Madison’s Freakfest Halloween festival (R.I.P.), RB Dare Ogunbowale scored on an 11-yard touchdown run to defeat the Cornhuskers in overtime.

Wisconsin will host Iowa on October 14th. That would be the only earlier opportunity for UW to host a primetime game featuring a ranked opponent. The kickoff time for the fight over the Heartland Trophy has not yet been announced or reported.
