A current 2025 SMU commit is projected to flip to the Badgers.

Wisconsin Badgers football head coach Luke Fickell talks to his players on the sideline

It’s no secret that the Wisconsin football team has been recruiting at a high level this summer. The coaching and recruiting staff for the Badgers have been rolling, adding a ton of talent to the 2025 recruiting class. The class currently stands at 22 committed players, placing them 21st in the 247Sports Composite Team Rankings.

With 21 committed players, the Badgers appear to be getting close to filling out their roster. There are still a few targets out there that Luke Fickell and his staff would love to bring into the fold.

One of those players is cornerback Zay Gentry, a current SMU commit from Anna, Texas.

Gentry has been a high-priority target for the Wisconsin football team, but getting him out of Texas and away from home was seemingly their largest obstacle to overcome. But this recruiting staff is persistent and refuses to take no for an answer.

A perfect example of this was the recruitment of 4-star offensive lineman Hardy Watts. After his visit to Michigan, it seemed like he was a virtual lock to be a Wolverine. But after he left Ann Arbor without committing, the Wisconsin football staff went to work and eventually pulled off an impressive recruiting win over a pair of blueblood programs, Michigan and Clemson.

It seems as though this staff is working their magic again. Gentry has been committed to SMU since May. But even while he was committed, he took an official visit to Wisconsin in June, and it gave him a lot to think about.

After the Badgers lost a commitment when cornerback Rukeem Stroud flipped to UCF, it would make sense for them to turn up the heat on Gentry to flip.

Now, the hard work seems to be paying off as the tide looks to be turning in the Badgers’ favor. Steve Wiltfong, the Vice President of Recruiting and Transfer Portal for On3.com, has put in a prediction for Gentry to flip from SMU to the Wisconsin football team. LSU/SMU Analyst, Bill Embody, has also logged a prediction for the flip.

According to the 247Sports composite rankings, Gentry is a 3-star cornerback. He is the 540th overall prospect in the country, the 46th cornerback, and the 86th overall player in Texas.

If the Wisconsin football team were to flip Gentry, the Badgers would jump three teams in the class rankings from No. 21 to 18th as it currently stands, including SMU. Although nothing is imminent, there certainly seems to be some smoke, so Wisconsin football fans should be on the lookout for a possible addition to their great 2025 class.
