On Wednesday night, the honeymoon stage on the recruiting trail for Luke Fickell and the Wisconsin football program endured its first hiccup.

UW’s first committed player in the 2024 recruiting class, three-star CB Austin Alexander out of Chicago Heights, Illinois, announced he was de-committing from the University of Wisconsin in a post on social media.

“Me and my family had a long talk about my commitment to Wisconsin, and we feel as though it’s best to de-commit from Wisconsin and open up my recruitment while I’m getting to know the new coaching staff and other schools,” Alexander explained. “Wisconsin is a great school, and I hope to still be recruited by Wisconsin. Please respect my decision.”

Alexander gave his verbal to the Wisconsin football program back in October; however, that commitment came under interim head coach Jim Leonhard.

The 6-foot-1, 165-pound CBs de-commitment from UW comes on the heels of picking up an offer from USC, setting off a chain reaction that included scholarships from Northern Illinois and Iowa State.

According to 247Sports, Alexander is the No. 48 CB in the 2024 recruiting class and the No. 14 player in Illinois.

Where the 2024 Wisconsin Football Recruiting Class Currently Stands

With Alexander reopening his recruitment, Wisconsin football has only one player committed in the 2024 recruiting class, four-star quarterback Mabrey Mettauer out of The Woodlands, Texas.

With arguably the most important piece already in the fold at QB, Luke Fickell and his coaching staff have nothing to worry about this early in the recruiting cycle.
