Wisconsin Football DAWG of the Week vs. Purdue
Wisconsin Football Dawg of the Week
The Wisconsin Football Dawg of the Week series is an opportunity to spotlight a player that had a massive impact on the game. Earning this prestigious honor is more than just statistical output. It’s all about which Badgers player let that inner dawg out.
Certainly stats will factor into this weekly award — but this particular accolade is more than who filled up the stat sheet. More simply — what player would not be denied. When a players best was required — who rose to the occasion?
Wisconsin Football Quarterback Tanner Mordecai
It did not take long to see who was playing with that dawg in them on Friday night. On the first Wisconsin drive, quarterback Lamar Jackson — pardon me — Tanner Mordecai ran down the middle of the field like a runaway freight train. The 6th year signal caller gashed the Boilermakers defense at will all game. While the Southern Methodist transfer is known for his gaudy passing stats, one of the more underrated tools in his toolbox is his ability to run.
The Wisconsin captain has electric feet and has a great feel on when to break the pocket. Mordy, as I affectionally call him, threw 17/27 for 174 yards and an interception. What he did with his legs was very important as he broke the game open 14-0 before all 72 Purdue fans could get their hot dogs and settle into the game.
Ultimately, this is not a win that will move the meter as we have beaten Purdue like their Worlds Biggest Drum 17 times in a row, but after the loss of Chez Mellusi, this was a needed result going into the bye. It’s going to be hard to replace Mellusi’s production, both in rushing and pass protection, but if Lamar Mordecai is out there scootin’ for touchdowns at will — that will lessen the loss of the graduate running back.
UW will have a bye week this week and will face off next against Rutgers on 11/7.
