Wisconsin Football Dawg of the Week
The Wisconsin Football Dawg of the Week series is an opportunity to spotlight a player that had a massive impact on the game. Earning this prestigious honor is more than just statistical output. It’s all about who let that inner dawg out.
Certainly stats will factor into this weekly award — but this particular accolade is more than who filled up the stat sheet. More simply — what player would not be denied. When a players best was required — who rose to the occasion?
Wisconsin Football Safety Hunter Wohler
Could it have been anyone else this week? Hunter Wohler is the most impactful player on the Wisconsin football defense — and I don’t know that its close. After a quick three-and-out by the Badgers offense, Wohler said enough it enough and decided to break the seal on turnovers. With his defense needing a play to be made — Wohler made a great read and snagged the pass out of the morning air.
It doesn’t stop there though. With Georgia Southern driving down the field, after another quick Badgers three-and-out on offense, Wohler baited the Eagles 5th-year senior QB Davis Brin into yet another turnover. As if we were watching prime Ken Griffey Jr patrolling center-field for the Mariners, Wohler read the eyes of the quarterback and beat the Eagles wide receiver to the spot. The former Muskego Warrior hung in the air for so long it was if he was levitating.
The junior made his presence felt all over the field Saturday afternoon. It wasn’t just his filling of the stat sheet that standout — its how we got there. Finishing the day with a team high 10 tackles, he also had two interceptions and a sack. Wohler would not be denied and willed his defense to a great showing. While there were good performances from others — this award is built for performances like this and that is why Hunter Wohler is the Wisconsin Football DAWG of the Week vs. Georgia Southern.
UW wrapped up non-conference play and have a short week as they tangle with Purdue Friday night at 6 PM on FS1.
