Wisconsin Women’s Basketball May Renew Marquette Rivalry
Wisconsin women’s basketball is entering its third season under head coach Marisa Moseley. After inheriting a program that had won only five games in the last season, Coach Mo’s squad has made steady progress in her first two seasons in Madison. Despite only going 11-20 overall in 2022-23, UW won six Big Ten games – a mark that neither of the previous two head coaches of the Badgers reached in their combined ten seasons.
In addition to wins, UW’s seasons have been missing a marquee non-conference opponent. Unlike the men’s basketball team, Wisconsin women’s basketball does not play Marquette annually. The Golden Eagles and Badgers briefly held an annual series beginning in 2009, but the in-state rivals have not faced off since 2017.

UW will play in the “Shell Division” in a first-round game against Arkansas on Friday, November 24th. Wisconsin women’s basketball will play Saturday the 25th against either Boston College or Marquette.
If the Badgers play the Golden Eagles, they can snap a three-game losing streak in the I-94 rivalry. Dating back to the 1998-99 season (as far back as I could find results), Marquette holds an 8-5 edge in the series.
In a potential matchup with Marquette, UW would see a familiar face on the bench. Jonathan Tsipis, Moseley’s predecessor who spent five years as head coach of Wisconsin women’s basketball, joined MU in 2022 as an advisor for scouting and analytics. Rising seniors Brooke Schramek, Halle Douglass, and Natalie Leuzinger played their first season in Madison under Tsipis.
Notably, the Wisconsin men’s basketball team will play in the men’s counterpart of the Fort Myers Tip-Off. The men’s tournament begins on November 20th, with Wisconsin facing Tony Bennett and the Virginia Cavaliers. UW will play West Virginia or SMU in a second game on November 22nd.
