Wisconsin Badgers hockey players have a long history of success at the professional level. Players including Dany Heatly, Ryan McDonagh, and Kyle Turris enjoyed long NHL careers after hearing their names called in the first round of the NHL Draft. One more Badger had their name called tonight in the first round.

Wisconsin Badgers Hockey: Center Charlie Stramel Drafted by the Minnesota Wild

The Minnesota Wild selected Charlie Stramel with the 21st overall pick. The Rosemount, MN native gets an opportunity to play professionally for his hometown team.

In Stramel’s one season in Madison, he recorded five goals and seven assists in 33 games. Evaluators praise the right-handed center as a playmaking power forward. At six-foot-three-inches and 215 pounds, he is unafraid to battle for loose pucks, rebounds, and tip-ins. Insiders expect Stramel to return to UW for his sophomore season.

Stramel is the 18th Badger to be selected in the first round and the 174th Badger selected overall in the history of the NHL Draft. With his selection, a Wisconsin Badger has been selected in 26 consecutive NHL drafts.

Wisconsin Badgers Hockey Players with NHL Draft Hopes

In addition to Stramel, four incoming Badgers hope to hear their names called during this year’s NHL Draft. Multiple outlets project William Whitelaw, ranked 42nd among North American-born players according to NHL Central Scouting, as a second or third-round draft pick. Fellow incoming freshmen Brady Cleveland, Zach Schulz, and Joe Palodichuk project as potential late-round selections.
