Wisconsin Football Should Pursue Mississippi State Transfer QB Will Rogers

Will Rogers would make a lot of sense for Wisconsin football (and every other team in America).

Mississippi State senior quarterback Will Rogers is entering the transfer portal — and the Wisconsin Badgers football program should be among the team’s lining up to bring him aboard.

Across 43 starts in four seasons for the Bulldogs, Rogers threw for 12,315 yards for 94 touchdowns and 28 interceptions. He also completed 69.3% of his passes at a 6.6 yards per attempt clip.

He’s sure to garner attention from nearly every quarterback-starved team across the country when the transfer portal window officially opens on December 4 — and when it does, the Wisconsin football coaching staff should be on the phone.

Why Wisconsin Football Should Pursue Mississippi State QB Will Rogers

Although the Badgers still have one regular season contest vs. Minnesota and a Bowl game to play — Wisconsin football needs to see if Will Rogers is interested in visiting campus so they can sell him on their vision.

Much like Tanner Mordecai last offseason, Will Rogers is a fringe NFL prospect at this point in his career. He’s an experienced passer with four years of starts under his belt and great accuracy on short & intermediate passes — making him a perfect fit for Phil Longo’s system.

Although things didn’t go according to plan for the Wisconsin football offense this season — Coach Longo has helped develop NFL talents such as Sam Howell, the starting QB for the Commanders, and North Carolina standout Drake Maye. His track record alone could be enough to garner a conversation with one of the top available signal callers on the market.

Right now, the Wisconsin Badgers are expected to enter 2024 with an inexperienced quarterback room that features Braedyn Locke (whom Rogers was teammates with at Mississippi State), Nick Evers, Myles Burkett, Cole LaCrue, and incoming freshman Mabrey Mettauer

Having a veteran presence to lead that room makes a ton of sense. Still, if that player can also step in and help establish an identity on offense as the Wisconsin football team enters a new era of Big Ten competition next season, that would be even better.

Something tells me this recruitment will take more than a system fit to sell him — especially when you consider the NIL money getting thrown around to plug and play starting quarterbacks. Hopefully, the Camp Randall Club is ready to make moves behind the scenes this offseason.
