Madison, Wis. — Ever since UW hired Luke Fickell as head coach and brought in Phil Longo to implement his high-powered air-raid offense, the Wisconsin Badgers have quietly emerged as a destination school for some of the nation’s top quarterbacks.

Shortly after adding several high-profile signal callers from the transfer portal, UW received a present on Christmas Eve when 2024 four-star quarterback Mabrey Mettauer announced his verbal commitment to the University of Wisconsin.

Per the industry-generated 247sports Composite, he is the No. 380 overall prospect in the 2024 recruiting class, the No. 27 QB in the country, and the No. 63 player in Texas.

The Woodlands High School standout chose the Wisconsin Badgers over offers from Arizona State, Arkansas, Baylor, California, Cincinnati, Duke, Florida, Georgia Tech, Houston, Kansas, Louisville, LSU, Miami, North Carolina, Ole Miss, TCU, and several others.

“Wisconsin, for a long time, has been missing a strong quarterback,” Mettauer said. “I feel like I’m that missing piece that can take them to the next level.”

Scouting Report on 2024 Wisconsin Badgers Commit Mabrey Mettauer

Mabrey Mettauer, a Trevor Lawrence doppelgänger, threw for 2,621 yards and 32 touchdowns to only six interceptions while completing 66% of his passes this past season. According to MaxPreps, he also ran for 613 yards and added seven more scores on the ground.

The 6-foot-5, 215-pound QB is a dual-threat talent with experience running a spread offense. As a passer, Mettauer has a powerful arm that can throw into tight windows and extend plays with his legs if the pocket collapses. The Texas native also throws accurately, has a nice touch pass, works through his reads, and can get the ball out quickly.

From a development standpoint — he’s further along than most Wisconsin Badgers quarterback prospects entering their senior year of high school.

He’s not a track star by any means, but the four-star prospect is a big and physical runner that can pick up some extra yardage and move a pile. Mettauer is someone UW can get creative with by mixing in QB powers, the occasional read option (this isn’t an all-the-time thing), RPOs, etc.

“I’m really a dual threat, so I think I can run and pass the ball super well,” Mettauer told The Athletic. “And I’m not afraid to lay the boomstick to anybody. I’m definitely not scared of anybody. I know I can throw really well, move around in the pocket, just get the first down when it’s needed.”

Final Thoughts

Quarterback scouting is arguably the most challenging thing for talent evaluators to project — but it’s worth mentioning that this kid has all the tools you could ask for — he’s a prototype signal caller with a chance to thrive under Wisconsin Badgers offensive coordinator Phil Longo.

As it stands, I might be higher on Mettauer’s future long-term than anyone actively on the roster. Braedyn Locke and Nick Evers are incredibly talented in their own right, so that should tell you how fortunate Wisconsin is at the quarterback position moving forward.
