Henry Jacobs High School tight end Grant Stec faces Cary-Grove, Ill. on Friday Setp. 15 at Jacob High School in Algonquin, Ill.

Wisconsin football identified, offered, and closed on four-star tight end Grant Stec early in the recruiting process. Now, after putting pen to paper, he’ll be playing for the Badgers at Camp Randall next season.

Stec, a borderline college-ready prospect from a physical standpoint, quickly became the top tight-end target for Luke Fickell and company and closed things out shortly after his junior day visit.

The Illinois native made things official on Wednesday by signing his letter of intent to join the Badgers as part of the early signing period on National Signing Day.

Grant Stec is a nice pickup for the Wisconsin football team at tight end. Physically, he looks like a traditional TE who is an asset in the run game, but Stec can also split out wide and stretch the seam.

He stands out as a blocker who plays with tremendous effort and functional strength that should translate once he’s in a college strength and conditioning program. Stec is a good route runner with above-average ball skills and is versatile enough to be a matchup problem.

Commitment to the Wisconsin Football Program

Grant Stec committed to the Wisconsin football team on January 29, 2023, shortly after meeting with the coaches during his junior day recruiting visit.

Stec held 15 Division 1 offers but chose the Wisconsin Badgers over teams like Iowa, Arkansas, Cincinnati, Florida, Michigan State, Minnesota, Penn State, Tennessee, Rutgers, and several others.

The Badgers tight end depth chart was a mess this past season. Wisconsin is still waiting to hear if Hayden Rucci will return for another season, and the pairing of Tucker Ashcraft and Riley Nowakowski also played roles in 2023. LSU tight end Jackson McGohan is transferring to UW this offseason, making Stec’s bid for early playing time a bit crowded. That said, it is still possible that he could earn snaps as a freshman.

Wisconsin football is overhauling this position group, so seeing how things pan out when spring and fall camp rolls around will be interesting. Either way, Stec looks like a starting-caliber player, regardless of when that opportunity comes.
