One Wisconsin basketball player has shattered a record I once called “unbreakable” just by appearing in the NCAA Tournament. The Wisconsin Badgers have much loftier goals than appearing in a single game, but the record is noteworthy. Especially for a player with as many accolades as Tyler Wahl.

The COVID-19 pandemic fundamentally changed how we look at numbers in college basketball record books. The NCAA’s decision to allow players to participate in the 2020-21 seasons without it counting against their eligibility has led to much older, experienced players. At 23 years old, almost nobody fits that mold better than Wahl.

Wahl has appeared in 162 games for Wisconsin basketball. That number stands alone as he surpassed his fellow Minnesota native Brad Davison’s 161 games. Thanks to being awarded a fifth year of eligibility, Wahl and Davision set a mark more than ten games higher than the next most-tenured Badger.

The 2022 All-Big Ten Honorable Mention has grown into the centerpiece of Badgers head coach Greg Gard’s team. His 120 games started and 106 wins played are fifth-most in program history. Wahl was also named to the all-tournament team in Wisconsin’s last three holiday invitationals. Wahl earned the honors at the 2021 Maui Invitational and 2022 Battle 4 Atlantis and won the 2023 Fort Myers Tip-Off Tournament MVP.

Tyler Wahl’s Name is Littered Throughout the Badgers Record Book

Wisconsin forward Tyler Wahl (5) is embraced by head coach Greg Gard after coming out late in the second half of their game Thursday, March 7, 2024, at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wisconsin. It was the fifth-year players’ last regular-season home game. Wisconsin beat Rutgers 78-66.

Wahl has not only played in a record number of games. He is also among the most impactful Wisconsin basketball players in history. On the defensive end, the forward’s 166 steals are the eighth-most, and his 84 blocks are the 15th-most in program history.

Perhaps most impressive are Wahl’s rebounding numbers. He has made his name cleaning up on the offensive glass with 237 rebounds which ranks sixth among all Badgers. When you include defensive boards, Wahl’s 793 total rebounds are the eighth-most by any player in a Wisconsin uniform.

With a hopeful March Madness run yet to come, we may see Wahl continue to ascend the record book.
