Wisconsin Badgers Football

Wisconsin football will open its 2023 season with a new look on offense and defense. Before getting caught up in all the new faces, remember that the Badgers return a significant amount of their 2022 production. According to SP+, Wisconsin ranks first in the Big Ten West, third in the conference overall, and 27th nationally in returning production.

Between transfers, freshmen, and veterans, who will step up for UW this season? Even with schematic changes on both sides of the ball, we attempt to project the team’s statistical leaders:

Running Back Braelon Allen

Braelon Allen returns for his junior season with tremendous expectations. The junior has led Wisconsin Badgers football in rushing yards and touchdowns each of his first two seasons. Although he was “just 17 years old,” the Fond du Lac native captured his RB1 role as his freshman season wore on.

Now, Allen returns to an offense that may allow him to be even more successful than he has. With the weapons assembled by offensive coordinator Phil Longo and wide receivers coach Mike Brown, defenses will not be able to load the box against Allen. Even if the former four-star recruit does not reach his 2022 mark of 230 carries, he may surpass his 1242 yards.

Runner-Up: Running Back Chez Mellusi

Longo plays to his personnel strengths. In 2020, his North Carolina Tar Heels produced two running backs who amassed over 1,000 rushing yards. With senior Chez Mellusi as more than just a serviceable backup, Wisconsin football could replicate that success on the ground.
