Former Wisconsin football walk-on Ross Gengler announced that he would enter the transfer portal on Friday night.

“I am forever grateful for the opportunity to be part of the Wisconsin Badger Football program for the past 4 years,” Gengler said in a social media post. “Thank you to Coach Chryst, Coach Leonhard, Coach Haering, Coach Fickell, and Coach Mitchell for giving me the opportunity to play for a team that I have not only watched growing up but dreamed of playing for in Camp Randall.”

The redshirt junior enters the portal with two years of eligibility remaining.

Gengler, a Delavan, Wisconsin native, joined the Badgers as a walk-on in 2020. He would redshirt during the 2020 season and would get his first action in 2022, appearing in eight games on special teams. In 2023, Gengler appeared in the home finale against Nebraska.

Coming out of high school, Gengler recorded a grand total of 315 tackles, 32 TFLs, and 12 sacks. After a standout senior season at Delavan-Darien, the 6-foot-2 OLB was an All-State Honorable Mention and the Southern Lakes Defensive Player of the Year.

Gengler will now search for a new opportunity with a better playing time situation.

The former walk-on is the third Wisconsin football player to enter the transfer portal, joining Dylan Barrett and Myles Burkett.
