Former Wisconsin football head coach Paul Chryst has been on several shortlists for Power 5 jobs this offseason — and after his interview on Monday, he will remain on the market for the time being.

Oregon State announced on Tuesday that current Beavers defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Trent Bray will become the next head coach in Corvallis. His hiring makes sense, considering he’s a former Oregon State player and has been a member of the coaching staff since 2018.

As for Chryst, he’ll undoubtedly have other schools reaching out in the coming weeks with the college football regular season coming to a close.

It’s still November, and Paul Chryst has already interviewed with Northwestern and shot them down. He’s also been mentioned as a potential target of the Indiana Hoosiers — who recently fired Tom Allen.

Although most schools in flux are looking for a young, offensive, or defensive guru to energize their program, Chryst shouldn’t be the afterthought these fanbases seem to think he is, considering his impressive track record — which includes a hell of a lot of winning.

While serving as the head coach of the Wisconsin football program, Chryst compiled a 67-26 record. He also won the Big Ten West three times (2016, 2017, 2019) and twice won the B1G Coach of the Year.

Right now, Chryst is 58 years old and is serving as a special assistant to the head coach for the Texas Longhorns. But if this early college football coaching carousel is any indication, he’ll be back on the sideline in 2024.
