Can Wisconsin Football Flip a 2024 Commitment Away From a Big Ten Foe?

Can Wisconsin football flip a committed 2024 recruit from within the Big Ten?

The vast majority of the 2024 Wisconsin football recruiting class is already in the fold — with just a few high-end targets still uncommitted. This means that the coaching staff will soon focus on late-blooming prospects and identifying flip candidates that had strong relationships with the position coaches pursuing them.

When you take a moment to consider the Badgers remaining positions of need in the 2024 cycle, it doesn’t take long to realize UW needs additional bodies on the defensive line.

As it stands, Wisconsin has commitments from three-star defensive end Hank Weber and Dillan Johnson, who flipped his commitment from Northwestern. But there was another high-pedigree recruit Wisconsin football was in deep with that could make some sense as a flip candidate from a Big Ten rival.

Wisconsin Football Could Make Another Run at 2024 Four-Star DE Dominic Nichols.

Arguably the top flip candidate for the Wisconsin football program in the 2024 cycle is four-star defensive end Dominic Nichols from Ijamsville, Maryland.

He took an official visit to Madison in June and was at one point thought to be the favorite to land the 6-foot-5, 250-pound defensive end.

“It was great,” Nichols said after his visit. “You don’t really get a city feel, which is great, because I’m not a city person. It’s also not in the middle of nowhere, tiny town, which I also don’t like. It felt good…I feel like I could definitely live there comfortably.”

According to the 247Sports composite rankings, Nichols is the No. 33 EDGE and the No. 14 recruit to hail from Maryland.

Anyone paying attention to Big Ten recruiting knows that Michigan has been crushing it in the 2024 cycle. However, eight recruits are committed in their class at the defensive line — which is a heck of a lot.

Greg Scruggs and the Wisconsin football coaching staff are well aware of this situation, and a source indicated that the Badgers will continue their pursuit of Nichols for the foreseeable future.

This will be an intriguing recruitment to monitor moving forward because UW has a faster track to playing time if that’s what’s important to the Maryland native. Could a flip be on the horizon? I guess we’ll have to wait and see, but I wouldn’t count Wisconsin out of this one yet.
