Luke Fickell and offensive coordinator Phil Longo decided the Wisconsin football program needed to dip back into the transfer portal for help at quarterback. The Badgers came out with Miami transfer Tyler Van Dyke, who was a former four-star recruit and multi-year starter in the ACC.

Although Wisconsin fans have had mixed emotions, there’s plenty to like about the talent. Van Dyke also provides a stabilizing presence in a quarterback room that’s otherwise filled with inexperienced options.

For reference, soon-to-be redshirt sophomore Braedyn Locke would have had the most in-game experience of the group with just three starts. Oklahoma transfer Nick Evers has just one career pass attempt and Cole LaCrue has never seen the field. Then there’s incoming freshman Mabrey Mattauer, who is unlikely to be game-ready.

That made it imperative that Wisconsin football added a veteran to the group. Even if you like the young talent in-house, which most people do, the Badgers would have been one injury away from disaster.

Over 28 starts with the Hurricanes, the Connecticut native threw for 7,469 passing yards, 54 touchdowns, and 23 interceptions, with a career completion rate of 63.7%. Given the lack of a downfield passing game a year ago, adding someone with 11 career games with 300+ passing yards is a boon for the Badgers, no matter how you feel about the addition.
