The Wisconsin football program picked up its 21st commitment in the 2024 cycle on Friday afternoon, with three-star safety Xavier Lucas coming on board.

The Florida native took to social media to announce his commitment.

According to the industry-generated 247Sports Composite, Lucas is the No. 772 player in the nation, the No. 82 safety, and the No. 108 player in Florida.

The three-star safety picked up 34 total offers throughout his recruitment. Wisconsin beat out notable schools, including Alabama, Florida State, Michigan, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Pittsburgh, and many more.

Here’s a look at the newest Badger’s game and what stands out.

Wisconsin Football Commit Xavier Lucas Scouting Report

The first thing that jumps out about Lucas is his frame. Standing at 6 feet, 185 pounds, the three-star safety already possesses the size to be a difference maker at the safety spot. He’ll benefit from a collegiate strength and conditioning program, as he should be able to carry more weight comfortably.

Not only does Lucas have the size, but he also has the speed to keep up with opposing receivers due to his track and field background. The Florida native showcased his speed in the 100-meter dash event during his junior season, logging times of 10.99, 10.99, 11.06, and 11.32, according to Athletic.net. Looking at his tape, you don’t see Lucas getting burned by opposing receivers too often. It also helps that he has fluid hips and the ability to stop on a dime when receivers make their cuts.

Lucas also shines with his physicality. When in press coverage — which he’s done a lot of at the high school level — he has the strength to slow a receiver on their first step and get them off balance. Pair his physicality with his frame, and quarterbacks will have to throw into some really tight windows.

There’s a lot to like about Lucas in his tackling ability. As mentioned, his speed stands out, but I’d say his speed really flashes when he’s closing in on opposing ball carriers. He doesn’t just take off toward ball carriers, though, as he’s decisive and patient when reading the offense before he turns on the burners.

Lucas has the versatility to play either safety or cornerback at the next level. Though his skills will likely translate better at safety, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him get some reps as a press man corner at the next level.

Final Thoughts

Lucas has the tools to be a difference-maker at the next level, but he’ll need to hone his craft a bit more. He’s still raw in some aspects, but that’s not to say he won’t be able to tap into his potential. With his upside and his physical attributes, UW got a good one here.

It will be worth watching if the Wisconsin football program can retain Lucas’ commitment. Florida State is reportedly his dream school, and if they make a pitch for him to come on board, Lucas could be on flip watch.

With Lucas’ commitment, Wisconsin now holds the No. 23 recruiting class in the country, per 247Sports.
