Wisconsin Football Offers In-State OT, Fickell Targeting Hoops Prospect, More

Wisconsin Football head coach Luke Fickell

It’s been a busy couple of days for the Wisconsin football program, ladies and gents, but fear not because BadgerNotes can help get you back up to speed with a roundup of some important news you may have missed.

Luke Fickell Offers Greg Gard’s Top Hoops Target

On Tuesday afternoon, Luke Fickell and his coaching staff extended a scholarship offer to 2024 four-star wide receiver Daniel Freitag out of Minneapolis, Minnesota.

If that name sounds familiar, that’s because Wisconsin men’s basketball coach Greg Gard offered him as a point guard in the summer of 2021, and Freitag has been a top priority for him and his staff ever since.

“I have not yet made a decision on which sport I will play; playing both is also in the conversation,” Freitag told BadgerNotes back in December.

Because of his established relationship with UW and familiarity with the program, don’t be surprised to see things intensify between both sides.

The 6-foot-3, 175-pound WR currently holds offers from Minnesota, Notre Dame, Iowa State, and Kansas State for football. In basketball, Freitag has offers from UW, Minnesota, Virginia, Notre Dame, Nebraska, Iowa State, Iowa, and Baylor.

Freitag is a four-star in both sports and is very much in play for Wisconsin — I’m of the opinion it helps UW’s chances more than it hurts them.

The Minnesota native announced his [football] scholarship offer from the University of Wisconsin via his Twitter account:

Wisconsin Football Offers 2025 In-State OL

Luke Fickell and the Wisconsin football coaching staff are in deep with the 2024 in-state offensive lineman. Now, they’re working ahead into the class of 2025 — which has several notable names right in their backyard.

On Monday, UW’s new offensive line coach Jack Bicknell offered a scholarship to 6-foot-7, 280-pound OT Owen Strebig out of Waukesha, Wisconsin.

The Waukesha Catholic Memorial standout, who has visited UW multiple times, will be back on campus on March 30 and currently holds offers from Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Penn State, and Purdue.

He’s now one of four 2025 in-state prospects holding an offer from the Wisconsin football program, joining Tre Poteat, Cooper Catalano, and James Flanigan. It’s incredibly early in Strebig’s recruitment, but Wisconsin should be tough to beat in this one.

Other Wisconsin Football News

Another in-state name in the class of 2024 that’s picking up some steam is three-star Arrowhead standout Garret Sexton, and the Wisconsin football coaching staff wants to get a closer look.

According to a report from 247Sports, the 6-foot-7 offensive tackle will visit UW on March 28, his first known visit to Madison since the Badgers’ loss to Washington State back in September under the Paul Chryst regime.

It’s also worth noting that Sexton is a high school teammate of another 2024 target of Wisconsin, three-star OT Derek Jensen.

Sexton has only played offensive line for one season but currently holds offers from Tennessee, Penn State, Iowa, Michigan State, Minnesota, Iowa State, Baylor, Illinois, Rutgers, Northwestern, Syracuse, Missouri, Kansas, and a host of other schools.

Word has hit that UW’s staff likes his film, so if he makes a good impression during his visit, don’t be shocked if he picks up a scholarship offer from the Wisconsin football program shortly after that.
