Wisconsin Football NFL Draft Profile: Joe Tippmann

Published

Wisconsin football offensive lineman Joe Tippman was selected the the 45th overall pick by the New York Jets in the 2023 NFL Draft

Wisconsin Football Alum Joe Tippmann’s NFL Draft Profile

The Wisconsin Badgers center has had an early second-round projection to a day three fourth-round projection.  Joe is a violent run blocker and a good athlete for his size.  Furthermore, he has a great feel and is fluid when pass-blocking.  Wisconsin football has been a farm for NFL linemen.  I expect the Badgers center to trend into a day-two pick.

  • Plays better downhill than laterally

Scouting Report

Certainly, when you look at Joe, the first thing that comes to mind is his size.  Standing at 6’6, he’s not your ordinary prototype interior lineman.  He can get into space quickly and has an incredible vision in the run game.  However, with his size, he has to make leverage a focal point.  From time to time he gets caught playing too high, which resulted in six holding penalties in 2022.  I would love to see Joe land on a team that runs many zone-running schemes and a lot of pulling.

As he stated in his interview at the combine, he is constantly working to improve on leverage.  At his size, it is easy for a defensive lineman to get under his pads.  His strong suit is his ability to move in space in the run game.  Joe credited playing scout team guard in his underclassmen days to his success of being good at pulling as a center.

I have him being drafted on day two as a late second or early third-round pick.
