The Wisconsin Badgers football team eked out another victory on Saturday. It was a slow but steady trudge to the finish line as UW defeated the Rutgers Scarlet Knights 24-13. Wisconsin kicker Nathaniel Vakos made a 39-yard field goal to put the Badgers up 3-0 a mere three minutes and 16 seconds into the game and never trailed.

Head coach Luke Fickell’s squad improved to 4-1 on the season and 2-0 in Big Ten conference play. Despite not putting together the electric start to the season that some fans had hoped for, Wisconsin football still controls its own destiny for a Big Ten title. Fans are optimistic but know there is work to be done.

Wisconsin Football Has an Issue Front and Center

UW Center Tanor Bortolini did not play a perfect game today. Several of his shotgun snaps to quarterback Tanner Mordecai missed the mark. One snap nearly sailed over the quarterback’s head, but Mordecai jumped to grab it and prevent disaster.

Bortolini was not the only Wisconsin football offensive lineman getting some heat.

Wisconsin Football Extends Lead with 95-Yard Pick-Six

With seconds remaining in the first half, Rutgers quarterback Gavin Wimsatt led his team to the Badgers six-yard line. The Scarlet Knights trailed only 10-0 and had a chance to position themselves for a second-half comeback. Then, Ricardo Hallman happened.

The redshirt sophomore cornerback jumped a short route and intercepted Wimsatt. Just a few seconds later, the Miami, Florida native was in for the score to put Wisconsin football up 17-0. Fans erupted.

Wisconsin Football Tight End Scores First Career Touchdown

However exciting the Hallman interception was, fans got one more set of fireworks in the second half. To put the proverbial dagger in the knights, Mordecai connected with freshman tight end Tucker Ashcraft for his first career touchdown. After dropping a pass earlier on the drive, the former three-star recruit bounced back in the best way possible.

Wisconsin Football Hosts Iowa Next Saturday

Next Saturday, the Badgers welcome the Iowa Hawkeyes to Camp Randall. Former Wisconsin Badger Deacon Hill may very well be the starting quarterback for Iowa in that game. Stay tuned to Badger Notes this week as we preview the battle for the Heartland Trophy.

I did say it was a slow and steady victory, after all. Bill_Woj does a great job here summarizing my feelings from the game.
