Luke Fickell knew the Wisconsin football team needed to address the running back spot in the 2024 recruiting class.

That priority was evident from the outset, knowing that Braelon Allen would likely move on to the NFL at season’s end. Also, before the injury that led to his return, Chez Mellusi had no eligibility left, which meant the Badgers would be without their top two backs in 2024.

Wisconsin Football Knew Grabbing Multiple RBs Was a Must

During his press conference on National Signing Day, Fickell candidly mentioned, “The running back position might have been one of the top targets for us,” acknowledging the urgent need to fortify this critical facet of the team. Now official, the departure of Braelon Allen, the star tailback for the past three seasons, created a conspicuous void within the lineup.

While Chez Mellusi’s return to the Wisconsin football team for a sixth season aligns well with offensive coordinator Phil Longo’s system, his injury woes have raised doubts about his reliability as the primary back.

While competent, alternatives like Jackson Acker and Cade Yacamelli have revealed themselves as complementary pieces rather than lead-backs.

Fickell emphasized the gravity of this recruitment cycle for the running back position, highlighting the signing of three important players. He highlighted each recruit’s distinctive strengths, acknowledging the need for young, talented players to step up early in this crucial position.

Dilin Jones, a four-star prospect from Maryland, earned praise for his versatility and untapped potential. Fickell praised Darrion Dupree from Chicago for his remarkable ball skills, foreseeing his early involvement in the passing game. Gideon Ituka, the most sizeable among the recruits, promises to add much-needed balance to the running back lineup with his 225-pound stature.

The Wisconsin football coach’s assessment underscores the importance of these recruiting additions, expressing confidence in their potential impact. He envisions a bright future for these young Badgers recruits, anticipating their substantial contributions in the upcoming season.
