Wisconsin men’s basketball isn’t being penalized for their brutal non-con schedule.

A brutal non-conference schedule for Greg Gard and the Wisconsin basketball program isn’t going to get any easier in the coming weeks.

Following a 4-2 start to the season, headlined by wins over Virginia and SMU en route to a championship win in the Fort Meyers Tip-Off, the Badgers once again put themselves on the radar of NCAA digital reporter Andy Katz.

On Monday, Katz released his updated Power 36 list — with the Badgers coming in at No. 32. Other Big Ten teams that made the list include Purdue (1), Ohio State (22), Illinois (31), and Nebraska (33).

As mentioned, the Wisconsin men’s basketball team continues its brutal schedule this week. They’ll first take on Western Illinois at home before hosting Marquette (3) at the Kohl Center, traveling to East Lansing for a road matchup against Michigan State, and finishing its daunting slate with a road matchup against Arizona (2).

I’ve seen plenty of reasons to be encouraged with what we’ve seen from Greg Gard and the Badgers this season. There is considerably more depth, the freshman class appears to be a good one, and Wisconsin is playing with more pace than we’ve seen in years past.

That said, Wisconsin basketball is still acclimating players like AJ Storr into its system, engraining its defensive principles into the newcomers, and shooting guard Connor Essegian is working his way back from injury.

I will reserve judgment on what this Wisconsin Badgers team is — or isn’t — until the ensuing three-game slate is in the rearview mirror. One thing is for sure: this Wisconsin basketball team will be battle-tested
