The No. 23 Wisconsin Badgers Wrestling program pounded the Wildcats to the tune of a 30–12 dual win Friday night!

Head Coach Chris Bono was asked about how important the moment heading into the stretch run of the Big Ten season.

“It’s very important. That was our first league win and were heading to Purdue on Sunday, and whenever you have these Friday/Sunday duals, it’s nice to get that Friday out of the way. You get on the bus and couple of the guys are a little happier and ready to roll.

Ready to get into Purdue and try to steal a win on the road. It’s never easy to win on the road but were excited to get out and get on that bus tomorrow morning.”

Let’s take a look at how the Badgers performed vs. Northwestern.

125 pounds

No. 2 Eric Barnett vs. Massey Odiotti

Barnett picked up right where he left off and ran through Odiotti for a major decision!

Barnett won the match 15–2 (major decision).

133 pounds

Nicolar Rivera vs. Patrick Adams

Nico has cat-like quickness and that was on full display as he had the speed and endurance on his side as he torched the would-be challenger.

Rivera won the match 13–4 (major decision).

141 pounds

Zan Fugitt vs. Kolby McClain

Welcome to the Field House, Zan! The true freshman scored early and often in his bonus point win! Congrats on your first Big Ten dual win! Zan was asked how it felt to win his match.

“I thought I did alright, definitely areas to improve to get better, but overall blessed with the opportunity to wrestle out here in the Big Ten”.

Head Coach Chris Bono was pleased with his true freshman.

“I see it everyday, right, that’s what he shows in the room. He shows up everyday and he competes and you go watch that match and he competed in every position. He’s good on top, he got through a turn, he scored on his feet and he got away. That’s what we see. I love the way he competes – it’s what we preach. We’re not too worried about results right now but how he competes and how much he’s getting better everyday.

We’ve been bringing him on these all these trips all year long and not wrestling him. To be able to to throw him out here, he stayed ready, he waited his turn, and that’s what I’m more impressed with. He could have sat back and not done a whole bunch, not been ready to wrestle, but when we told him we were going to give him an opportunity a day ago, he’s ready to go, he steps right in there and his training showed that tonight.”

Fugitt won the match 16–3 (major decision).

149 pounds

No. 22 Joseph Zargo vs. Aiden Vanderbush

Zargo was back in the lineup after missing the dual vs No. 6 Nebraska with an illness. He made the most of the return and earned a gritty decision.

Zargo won the match by a 4–1 decision.

157 pounds

Cody Goebel vs. No. 18 Trevor Chumbley

Goebel was making his Field House and Big Ten dual debut vs the ranked Wildcat.  It didn’t go his way but showed great fight and speed in his first conference dual.

Goebel lost the match 20–5 (technical fall).

165 pounds

No. 5 Dean Hamiti vs. No. 21 Maxx Mayfield

DJ didn’t need much time to establish an early 6–0 lead before his opponent was injured. In what looked to be just a routine ankle roll – Mayfield tried to give it ago before collapsing on the mat in pain. Sending T&P’s to Mayfield and his family and hope its not a serious injury.

Hamiti won this match by a 6– 0 injury designation.

174 pounds

No. 12 Max Maylor vs. David Ferrante

Max Maylor is the Smooth Criminal. For Max, its more than a walk-out song – its his whole aura. He never looks rushed and is always calm and collected.  Then he strikes!

After being shot on by Ferrante, Max went offensive and cradled him up like a newborn baby.  As a recent girl dad, he knows a thing or two about putting someone to bed.  All he needed was a couple of blankets for Ferrante as he put him on his back for an early bedtime.

Maylor won this match by fall.

184 pounds

No. 16 Shane Liegel vs. No. 33 Troy Fisher

Another gritty win for Liegel. Always a scrappy, tough and physical match – Liegel continues to impress with his skill and relentless motor.

Liegel won this match by a 4–2 decision.

197 pounds

Josh Otto vs. Evan Bates

Josh Otto was battling but just couldn’t get the offense going.

Otto lost this match by a 9–2 decision.

285 pounds

Gannon Rosenfeld vs. Jack Jesson

In another tough match, Rosenfeld continues to show his speed an athleticism in the weight class. He just needs to score a few more takedowns and this wins will start to pour in.

Rosenfeld lost this match by a 11–1 (major decision).
