The Wisconsin Badgers football program saw its first player enter the transfer portal in the spring window on Saturday.

Redshirt sophomore quarterback Nick Evers took to social media to announce that he will enter the transfer portal.

“Reflecting on my time at Madison, I’ll look back at it as a place of immense growth for me both on and off the field. For that, I’m truly thankful to Coach Fickell and the entire staff for that growth,” Evers said.

Evers will have three years of eligibility remaining at his next stop.

Wisconsin Football Loses Nick Evers to the Transfer Portal

This move isn’t a big surprise, considering Evers had not cracked the two deep since he transferred in from Oklahoma during the 2023 offseason. Though he’s flashed some of his athletic tools during the spring practice sessions, the redshirt sophomore has mostly taken reps with the third-team offense.

Coming out of high school, Evers was ranked as the No. 172 player in the country and the No. 9 quarterback in the 2022 recruiting class. He spent his freshman season at Oklahoma, appearing in one game and attempting one pass against Texas.

Evers transferred to Wisconsin after Luke Fickell took over the program. He was part of a loaded class that also included quarterbacks Tanner Mordecai and Braedyn Locke. Evers and Locke competed for the QB2 spot, but Locke’s understanding of the playbook gave him the boost to assume that role, leaving Evers as the third-string quarterback.

Tyler Van Dyke transferred in to UW during the offseason, and a quarterback battle has ensued between the former Miami quarterback and Braedyn Locke during spring ball, leaving Evers third in line again.

Evers was one of, if not the most physically gifted player in the Badgers quarterback room, but he just wasn’t able to get over the hump and crack the two-deep.

With Evers’ departure, Wisconsin’s quarterback room will now comprise of Tyler Van Dyke (Fifth-year SR), Braedyn Locke (RS SO), Cole LaCrue (RS FR), and Mabrey Mettauer (FR).
