Where is Wisconsin Football in the “Way Too Early” Top 25 Rankings?

Wisconsin Football head coach Luke Fickell

The 2022 college football season officially ended this past week when the Georgia Bulldogs delivered a 65-7 beatdown of TCU in the National Championship. Which means it’s time to turn the page and start talking about what the people really want…Wisconsin football, right?

Since taking over the program, Luke Fickell and company have quickly given the Badgers a much-needed facelift, particularly on offense. Whether it be adding Phil Longo as OC or landing SMU transfer QB Tanner Mordecai, or even USC WR CJ Williams, there is no shortage of reasons Wisconsin football can’t bounce back in 2023.

Even though college football doesn’t return until August, ESPN recently tried its hand at putting together a “2023 way-too-early college football Top 25” rankings list.

Unfortunately, Wisconsin football failed to make the cut and instead was placed in the “just missed the top 25” category, coming in at No. 27. But this at least shows that the national media has taken notice of what’s happening in Madison this offseason following a disappointing 7-6 campaign.

Other Big Ten teams to crack the Top 25 were Ohio State (No. 2), Michigan (No. 3), Penn State (No. 6), and Iowa (No. 25).

My Way-Too-Early Wisconsin Football Thoughts

It’s hard to put a ton of expectations on the first year under a new regime, but I’m going to do it anyway.

Wisconsin football has a cupcake schedule in 2023, with its toughest games coming at home against Iowa and Ohio State and then finishing the year on the road at Minnesota.

Now, I’m not suggesting they’re going to run the table or anything crazy like that, but this is hardly a gauntlet.

Wisconsin should be in a position to compete for a Big Ten West title and possibly make its first trip back to Indy since 2019.
