The Wisconsin football team suffered a handful of prominent injuries just before the season opener. UW lost defensive end Isaiah Mullens, center Jake Renfro, and tight end Riley Nowakowski, all of whom were expected to be meaningful contributors.

After missing the season’s first two games, Wisconsin Badgers head coach Luke Fickell provided updates on their respective injuries at his weekly media availability.

Wisconsin Football Unsure When Its Trio of Contributors Will Return

It’s no secret that tight-end depth is incredibly thin for the Badgers, and it doesn’t sound like reinforcements are coming anytime soon.

Luke Fickell suggested that Riley Nowakowski won’t return to the lineup in the next two weeks. Still, Wisconsin football is targeting a potential week-five return to the field — although that’s subject to change.

As for sixth-year senior Isaiah Mullens, there was a glimmer of hope.

“I don’t know when exactly it will be,” Fickell told reporters. “It’s Monday. It would be great if we’d get him this week. I don’t know if that’s the case. I hope. But we’ll have to see come Tuesday and Wednesday.

The defensive line room hasn’t impressed through two weeks, so another big body that can help in the run game would be a welcomed addition.

The only update on Jake Renfro is that he’s out of a boot and making progress. If he can get back up to speed, Wisconsin football would benefit from him taking the starting center role and kick Tanor Bortolini back to guard.
