Wisconsin head coach Luke Fickell is shown during the second quarter of their game against Nebraska Saturday, November 18, 2023 at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison, Wisconsin.

In the aftermath of the Wisconsin football team’s triumphant 28-14 victory over Minnesota, Luke Fickell wasn’t just celebrating the reclaiming of Paul Bunyan’s Axe — although he knew what it meant to the Badgers.

He was rallying the team, soaking in the victory and reflecting on the season’s journey. Fickell’s fiery words echoed through the locker room, painting a vivid picture of unity and resilience.

“That’ll go right back up in that trophy case. I’m proud of you guys. This brotherhood is fricking strong,” Fickell exclaimed, igniting a wave of elation among the players. He emphasized the moment’s significance and the strength of their bond as a team.

Reflecting on the rollercoaster of a season Wisconsin football endured, Fickell praised the team’s growth through adversity.

“We know we’ve been through the ups and downs, but that’s what makes us who we are. Comfort does not make us who we are,” he emphasized, underlining the importance of resilience in shaping their identity.

Yet, the poignant and resounding call to “sink the boat” punctuated his speech, marking the end of an emotional rallying cry for the team.

With unwavering conviction, Fickell rallied the troops, urging them to embrace challenges, forge ahead, and stay true to the unyielding spirit that defines Wisconsin football.

Wisconsin Football Team Caps Season with Pivotal Trophy Win

As the regular season concluded with this emotional victory, Luke Fickell and his words echoed not just through the locker room but resonated as a testament to the team’s resolve.

It was a celebration, a moment of reflection, and a stirring call to keep striving for greatness, even in the face of adversity. Although Wisconsin football didn’t have the year many were expecting — in a way, the Badgers salvaged what once looked like a lost season. The hope is the strong finish will serve as a springboard into 2024.

Wisconsin now owns the all-time series lead 63-62-8 over Minnesota — and has claimed the Axe in 17 of the last 20 meetings between the two programs. Not to mention, the Badgers have now totaled 22 straight winning seasons since 2002 — the longest streak among Power 5 teams.
