The Wisconsin football program has long been known for its strong offensive line play, producing numerous NFL-caliber linemen in the last three decades. But in 2023, they have a standout offensive lineman who wasn’t with the Badgers last season, currently rated as the highest-graded returning offensive lineman in the Big Ten: Joe Huber.

Once Luke Fickell became the head coach at Wisconsin, he wasted little time bringing one of his most talented offensive linemen with him from Cincinnati. Huber was a redshirt sophomore and former walk-on who started all 14 games at right tackle this past season for the Bearcats.

According to Pro Football Focus, Huber logged 854 snaps in 2022 and finished with a grade of 80.6. Which, for reference, would have been the highest among the Badgers’ starting offensive line in 2022 and, as it turns out, the highest in the entire Big Ten conference.

Joe Huber will compete to earn a starting nod with the Wisconsin football team

Huber, a 6-foot-5, 310-pounder, came to the Wisconsin football program without a guaranteed starting spot. He spent spring practice competing at both right and left guard, finishing as the first-team left guard by the end of 15 sessions. It’s worth mentioning that expected starting center Jake Renfo went down with an injury, forcing Tanor Bortolini to shift inside.

With very few starting spots spoken for going into fall camp, Huber finds himself in a good spot to push for a starting nod at one of the guard spots and establish himself among the top five. At worst, he should provide veteran depth that will assuredly see the field in Phil Longo’s up-tempo offense.

Wisconsin Football Not Just Changing Offenses, but Its Entire Identity
