Wisconsin Football Fans React to “Embarrassing Loss” at Indiana

Wisconsin Badgers football in a loss to Indiana
Indiana's Brendan Sorsby (15) scores a touchdown during the first half of the Indiana versus Wisconsin football game at Memorial Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 4, 2203.

Wisconsin football took one of its worst losses in recent memory on Saturday. After coming into the season as the favorites to win the Big Ten West, the Wisconsin Badgers lost to a team that was barely top-100 in FBS according to ESPN’s Bill Connely’s SP+ ratings.

Wisconsin fell to 5-4 and, more importantly, a paltry 3-3 in a less than mediocre Big Ten West with a 20-14 loss to the Indiana Hoosiers. Indiana, with head coach Tom Allen on the hottest of hot seats in college football, defeated the Badgers for the first time in a non-COVID season since 2002.

So, yeah, fans are furious.

Wisconsin Football Fans Are Skeptical of Coach Luke Fickell

In his first year as head coach of the Wisconsin Badgers, Luke Fickell will not accomplish his goal of “competing for championships.” Despite playing in perhaps the worst Big Ten West ever, the Badgers need a miracle to win the division. Regardless of how lopsided a Big Ten championship game in Indianapolis would be, fans would prefer to watch Wisconsin at least play in it.

Do the Wisconsin Badgers Know About Field Goals?

Fickell brought in Nathaniel Vakos, a highly-touted kicker from the transfer portal, this offseason. With a scholarship kicker waiting on the sidelines, Fickell passed on two separate opportunities to attempt 50-yard field goals. In the closing minutes of the fourth quarter, the Wisconsin Badgers attempted and failed to convert on fourth down instead of trying a 51-yard field goal attempt while down only three points.

Vakos is three for seven on-field goal attempts of 50 or more yards in his career. His longest successful field goal this season was a 52-yarder. His career-long is 56 yards.

Matt Lepay, the radio play-by-play voice of the Wisconsin Badgers, reported during the game that Vakos was suffering from a back injury. Vakos was two-for-two on extra points but did not attempt a field goal on the day.

Is Badgers Hockey What Wisconsin Football Was Supposed to Be?

Many are saying that Wisconsin men’s hockey is back. In the past year, Wisconsin Badgers athletic director Chris McIntosh made two splashy hires. The first, Fickell, followed by the newest coach of the Badgers men’s hockey program Mike Hastings.

In the first season under Hastings, Wisconsin is ranked fifth in the country with a top-tier resume. The Badgers swept the Minnesota Golden Gophers at Minnesota while the Gophers were ranked #1 in the country. Last night, Wisconsin hosted #4 Michigan in the opening game of a two-game series at the Kohl Center and notched another victory.

So, was Hastings the home-run hire Fickell was supposed to be?
