Luke Fickell brought in some key transfer portal additions for the Wisconsin Badgers football program this offseason, and they’re expected to play some significant snaps this fall.

Wisconsin Badgers football fans have every reason to be excited about the upcoming 2023 season. With new head coach Luke Fickell at the helm, the Badgers are gearing up for a fresh start and a renewed sense of competitiveness after an unusual three-year skid.

One particular aspect of UW’s revamped roster that has garnered attention is the loaded group of transfers expected to play significant roles on the field this year.

Most years, the best way for a program to use the transfer portal is to bring in stop-gap veterans to plug holes to give younger players more time to develop. But when you take over a new program entirely, you must throw caution to the wind and bring in guys that fit your system to expedite re-tooling — especially when you go from a ground-and-pound offense to an air raid.

There were plenty of holes on the roster — at least in terms of Fickell’s perception because the Badgers went out and added 15+ transfers, many of which will probably be in the two-deep on September 2.

The Wisconsin Badgers Will Be Counting on Transfers to Play Some Big Roles

Luke Fickell and his coaching staff’s ability to attract top talent from the transfer portal has been nothing short of impressive. He has strategically brought in a healthy combination of players with experience to make an immediate impact — and young prospects to develop for the future

As mentioned before, a few standout transfers are projected to play significant roles on the field this season. Without giving it a ton of thought, the Wisconsin Badgers football team will likely have these offseason transfers playing legit roles on Saturdays:

That’s 12 total players. Insane. That number reflects the preexisting roster holes and the new coaching staff’s ability to bring in suitable replacements. Wisconsin’s roster is far from perfect, but they were able to revamp the program meaningfully before ever coaching a game in Madison.

As the 2023 season approaches, the Wisconsin Badgers football team is poised to make a statement under the guidance of new head coach Luke Fickell. With their talented transfers primed to play major roles, UW has the potential to exceed outside expectations and get back to competing at the highest level.

The anticipation is building, and I can’t wait to see what this new era will bring.
