Where Does the Wisconsin Football Wide Receiver Room Rank Nationally?
Phil Steele ranked the top WR rooms in the Big Ten and in all of college football — and Wisconsin football came in higher than most years.
New Wisconsin football head coach Luke Fickell and offensive coordinator Phil Longo took one look at the Badgers wide receiver room and knew they would need more bodies to run the air raid effectively.
Chimere Dike, Keontez Lewis, and Skyler Bell, the team’s top three pass-catchers, were returning in 2023. But UW went out and added USC transfer CJ Williams, Oklahoma State’s Bryson Green, and Cincinnati slot wideout Will Pauling, among others, to their stable — completing the offseason facelift.
Most, myself included, would argue that Wisconsin has its deepest group of wide receivers in recent memory (even if the bar wasn’t incredibly high to begin with).
Wisconsin Football Wide Receiver Room Ranks No. 36 Nationally and No. 5 in the Big Ten.
Recently, Phil Steele, the best preseason magazine writer on the market, ranked the top wide receiver rooms in the Big Ten conference and all of CFB, with Wisconsin football coming in among the top third of the conference — and right around the top half of all Power 5 programs.
Ahead of the 2023 season, the Badgers WR room is listed as the nation’s No. 36 group of pass-catchers and No. 5 in the Big Ten behind Ohio State, Maryland, Minnesota, and Penn State.
Without a top-tier, established WR1, it’s fair that Wisconsin football didn’t come in higher on this list from a national perspective. After the first season of running the air raid, UW might be able to change a few people’s minds about the way they play football under the new regime.
An argument could be made that Dike, Green, Pauling, or Williams could all push to become that top dog this season. Either way, with Tanner Mordecai under center slinging the rock — the Badgers will have a much better WR room to compliment their stable of tailbacks.
