Former Wisconsin football head coach Paul Chryst announced his decision to stay with the Texas Longhorns for the 2024 season, where he served as an analyst and special assistant to Steve Sarkisian.

This offseason, he was involved in coaching searches at Northwestern, Indiana, Oregon State, and, more recently, Iowa for a coordinator role.

Chryst was initially considered a top target of Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz for the offensive coordinator role. Nevertheless, a report from the Des Moines Register suggests that Chryst was ‘given the opportunity to take the job’ but ultimately chose against it.

While it’s still being determined what direction coach Chryst wants to go with his career in the long term, it’s fascinating that he felt it was the best decision to remain with Texas in a support role.

Ex-Wisconsin Football Coach Paul Chryst Declined Iowa OC Job

It’s safe to say that Paul Chryst will get another chance to become a head coach at the Power 4 level if that’s what he wants.

While leading the Wisconsin football program, Chryst led the Badgers to a 67-26 record. He also won the Big Ten Coach of the Year twice and never finished lower than second in the West in each of his full seasons.

Coach Chryst’s brand of throwback smash-mouth football isn’t for everyone, but the results and consistency are difficult to argue with. Hell, he’s the third-winningest coach in Wisconsin Badgers history.

As an offensive coordinator, Paul Chryst elevated the offense, achieving a Big Ten record for completion percentage (73.2% in 2010) and setting Wisconsin football records for points in 2011 (44.1).

In the meantime, he’ll continue working behind the scenes and working closely with Texas quarterbacks Quinn Ewers and Arch Manning. I’d put money on him becoming a head coach next offseason. Chryst has earned the right to be picky because of his resume.
