Walt McGrory, a former walk-on guard with the Wisconsin Badgers basketball team from 2017 to 2021, has tragically passed away after battling bone cancer for the past two years. He was only 24 years old.

A heartfelt message shared on McGrory’s Instagram account confirmed his passing on Saturday, leaving many mourning his loss.

During his four seasons with the Wisconsin Badgers, McGrory played in 37 games coming off the bench. Notably, he was a member of the 2019-20 team that clinched a share of the Big Ten regular-season title.

Despite planning a transfer to South Dakota in April 2021, McGrory’s journey took a different turn when he was diagnosed with osteosarcoma later that year. Throughout his battle, McGrory shared his experiences with cancer through regular updates on social media.

Wisconsin Badgers Issue Statement on the Passing of Walt McGrory

In response to McGrory’s passing, Wisconsin basketball head coach Greg Gard expressed condolences, highlighting McGrory’s resilience and bravery in facing cancer.

“The courage and fight that Walt demonstrated throughout his two-year battle with cancer was an inspiration to us all,” Gard remarked. “Walt never quit. Instead, he chose to fight every day and made the most of his circumstances by sharing his journey and inspiring others. Walt was a beloved member of our team and the Badger family, and we will miss him dearly.”

Before joining the Wisconsin Badgers, McGrory achieved a significant milestone by scoring a school record of 2,216 career points at Edina High School in Minnesota. He was a team captain in his junior and senior years, averaging 26.3 points, eight rebounds, and six assists in his final season.

Despite receiving scholarship offers from mid-major programs, such as Drake, Brown, Furman, South Dakota State, and Maine, McGrory opted to walk on to the Wisconsin Badgers basketball program.
