After a hiatus, Greg Gard and the Wisconsin Badgers basketball program (22-13) are making a return to the NCAA Tournament, securing their 23rd appearance in the last 25 years.

Following a deep run in the Big Ten tourney, the Badgers secured a respectable 5-seed in the South Region. This Friday, at 8:40 p.m. CT in Brooklyn, they will clash with the 12-seed James Madison Dukes (31-3).

“We’re a better team walking out of here today than we were when we showed up on Thursday,” Gard told reporters. “I’m looking forward to these guys having more ball coming up this next week in the tournament.

“You want to be playing your best basketball in March, and we are.”

Wisconsin Basketball Plays James Madison in First Round of the Tournament

James Madison, having clinched second place in the Sun Belt Conference, boasts an impressive record and arrives on a formidable 13-game winning streak, earning them a spot in the coveted big dance. Their standout victory against No. 4 Michigan State at the beginning of the 2023-24 season speaks volumes about how dangerous they can be.

It’s also worth noting that this is the first time Wisconsin basketball and James Madison have played one another.

Looking ahead, a potential round of 32 matchups could see the Wisconsin Badgers facing off against No. 4 Duke (24-8) or No. 13 Vermont (26-8) on Sunday, offering an exciting path through the tournament. Notably, Houston secured the top seed in the South Region.

Wisconsin basketball seems to be hitting its stride at the perfect moment, following an impressive run in the Big Ten Tournament. Despite falling short in the title game against Illinois 93-87, the Badgers showcased their grit by defeating Maryland, Northwestern, and top-seed Purdue along the way.

After a challenging month of February, where they struggled with a 2-6 record, Wisconsin men’s basketball is regaining its form after getting healthy, clinching wins in four of their last six.
