It’s been a whirlwind the past few weeks for the Wisconsin football program. The Badgers have added four players via the transfer portal, with QB Tyler Van Dyke, OLB John Pius, LB Leon Lowery Jr, and LS Cayson Pfeiffer all announcing commitments.

Though UW has filled some positions of need, there’s still one position need that stands out above the rest: defensive line.

Wisconsin has been in contact with multiple defensive line transfers, with Penn transfer Joey Slackman and Youngstown State transfer Anthony Johnson announcing offers. UW is still dishing out defensive line offers, as former Alabama DE Anquin Barnes announced an offer from the Badgers on Wednesday.

Barnes entered his name into the transfer portal on Monday and has already picked up some significant attention. The 6-foot-5, 315-pound DL has reported offers from Colorado, SMU, Memphis, Indiana, and Houston alongside his offer from UW.

Barnes appeared in Alabama’s season opener against Middle Tennessee and the non-conference finale against Chattanooga last season. He did not record any stats, but those marked the first games Barnes has competed in since joining the Crimson Tide in 2021.

Coming out of high school, Barnes was a four-star prospect, the No. 44 DL, and the No. 16 player in Alabama, per 247Sports.

UW will need to add multiple bodies at defensive line through the portal, as James Thompson Jr, Darian Varner, Cade McDonald, and Ben Barten are the only defensive linemen who recorded a stat during the 2023 season returning next year. The Badgers do have some young depth as well, but adding in a player with Barnes’ size would be a boost.

The Wisconsin football program currently holds four commitments in the transfer window, good for the No. 9 transfer class in the nation, per the 247Sports rankings.
