Former Wisconsin Football Coach Resigns Amid Legal Troubles
The former Badgers assistant coach is out at Michigan.
Two weeks. That’s how long former Wisconsin football assistant coach Greg Scruggs lasted as the new defensive line coach at Michigan after leaving the Badgers this offseason for greener pastures.
Adam Rittenberg of ESPN reported that Scruggs has resigned from his position at Michigan following a recent arrest for operating a vehicle while intoxicated — an incident that led to an indefinite suspension.
“I just received notice that Greg Scruggs has resigned his position, effective immediately,” Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore said in a statement. “I am unable to comment further as this is a University matter.”
Further, an Ann Arbor Police report stated that Scruggs was stopped around 2:15 a.m. on March 16 at an intersection with his hazard lights on. He went through field sobriety tests and later did two breath tests, registering blood-alcohol levels of .16 and .17 — twice the legal limit.
Former Wisconsin Football Coach Back on the Market
It’s hard to feel bad for former Wisconsin football assistant coach Greg Scruggs because he put himself in this situation. In his position, Scruggs is expected to be a leader of young men and a role model for his team.
He fell short of those expectations and has now paid the price. Scruggs is still a young assistant coach who has quickly risen through the coaching ranks since getting his start under Luke Fickell at Cincinnati. He parlayed that into an assistant d-line coach with the Jets before joining Wisconsin football last season — where he made a name for himself as a recruiter.
I’d made a joke about Fickell having a chance to do the funniest thing, but this is a serious matter, and the Badgers brought in E.J. Whitlow to fill that vacancy. Hopefully, Scruggs can get things back on track personally and professionally because life can come at you fast, and teams don’t often care to take chances on assistants who could be labeled as a distraction.
