Wisconsin Badgers Basketball Player Breakdown: Chucky Hepburn

Madison, Wis. – With the 2023-2024 college basketball season rapidly approaching, fans are anxiously awaiting the tip-off of their favorite team. Hoping for their team to defeat the rest and ultimately win the coveted March Madness tournament to be recognized as the best team in the country.

Players only have four years (five with covid year) with their college to try and take home the gold if they stay that long. With underclassmen draft entry and transfer portal numbers skyrocketing, loyalty has become more uncommon than in the past.

Wisconsin basketball is a program that, throughout all the chaos, has managed to keep more players than a lot of teams can say they kept. While keeping a winning culture and keeping player morale up. Players and fans alike are hoping to see the Badgers retake the spotlight and reach March Madness, a task that they couldn’t pull off for only the second time in the past 25 years.

Within the coming months, I am going to break down some of the biggest pieces on the Badgers roster while giving insight into the good, the bad, and what to expect moving forward from each player.

First off: Chucky Hepburn

The Good:

Chucky Hepburn is returning for his third season in Madison after leading the team in scoring last year with 12.2 points per game. He added 2.8 assists and 1.5 steals a night respectively. Hepburn leads the offense with a calm demeanor, never gets frustrated, and almost always makes the right play.

Hepburn’s best traits are definitely: ball-handling, three-point shooting, and defensive instincts. He uses his crafty dribble moves to create separation from the defense and nail the deep ball. He gets enough separation on his stepback where it is near impossible to get a good contest and uses a variety of moves to create space for himself or to dish to his teammates for easy baskets.

On the defensive end, Hepburn has a level of patience not often found in a college player, allowing himself to set himself up to be in the right position on every play.

The Bad:

There aren’t many flaws to Hepburn’s game, but if I had to single out one, it would be consistency. While more times than not, he is putting up good numbers all around, at times, he will have game stretches where he can’t string it together.

In a five-game stretch from January 28th to February 11th, he had 15+ points and at least one steal in every game. And following that, went on a four-game stretch where he accumulated a mere 24 total points and two steals.

If Hepburn can stay more consistent game in and game out, the Badgers are bound to win a few more of those tightly contested, low-scoring battles the fans are accustomed to.

What to Expect for Wisconsin Basketball

Chucky Hepburn showed big improvements this season for Wisconsin basketball. And all Badger fans should expect the now upperclassman to yet further improve his game to another level. Hepburn should be an All-Big Ten performer while further improving his efficiency from the field and becoming a leader on and off the court.

A tough schedule is ahead for the Badgers, but Chucky and the rest of the team are ready to make some noise once again.
