Paul Chryst Interviewing for Only Vacant Power 4 Head Coaching Job

Former Wisconsin football head coach Paul Chryst was floated as a possible candidate for the Boston College job to replace Jeff Hafley, who left to become the Packers defensive coordinator.

That whisper is now gaining some momentum.

Senior College Football Writer Pete Thamel of ESPN reported that the Eagles have planned for two rounds of in-person candidate interviews this week—with a final decision to be made by this coming weekend.

Chryst, who is 58 years old and currently serving as an analyst and special assistant to Steve Sarkisian at Texas, is among the confirmed candidates interviewing for the Boston College coaching job this week.

Ohio State offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien is another popular name that’s surfaced for the opening. That said, there could be five or more candidates vying for the last remaining Power 5 head coaching job.

Paul Chryst has also interviewed for a handful of other Power 5 jobs this offseason, such as Northwestern, Indiana, and Oregon State.

Rumors are that Bill O’Brien is the favorite in the clubhouse, but Paul Chryst would also check a lot of boxes for Boston College.

While serving as the head coach of the Wisconsin football program, Chryst led the Badgers to a 67-26 overall record, was 43-18 in Big Ten play, and went 7-2 in bowl appearances.

If you include his time at Pitt, the Madison native is 86-45, which shows the stability he could bring to the Eagles. Not to mention, Coach Dad developed 18 All-Americans during his time with the Wisconsin Badgers.

Paul Chryst knows the identity he wants in a program, given the ground-and-pound nature of his offense scheme, and on paper, those core values seem to align seamlessly with this school’s historical strengths.
