The Wisconsin Badgers football program is going to miss out on the top in-state recruiting talent for the third straight season.

Catholic Memorial four-star offensive lineman Owen Strebig recently announced that he’ll commit to a program on February 8th from a list of finalists that features Notre Dame, USC, Miami, Florida State, and the Wisconsin Badgers.

To Wisconsin’s credit, Luke Fickell and AJ Blazek made a last-ditch effort to sway Strebig toward the Badgers, but that won’t be enough.

Catholic Memorial offensive tackle Owen Strebig (58) and teammates participate in pregame ceremonies before the game against Pius XI on Friday, September 29, 2023, at Raabe Stadium in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin.

While it’s nice that Wisconsin football was named a finalist for Owen Strebig, the truth of the matter is this recruitment came down to Notre Dame and Miami. The Badgers and Florida State getting named was more of a formality.

A trio of recruiting insiders from 247Sports have all placed crystal balls for the No. 1 player in Wisconsin, according to the recruiting rankings, to land with Notre Dame coming off his most recent unofficial visit.

Credit goes to Joe Rudolph, the former Wisconsin football offensive line coach, for his work in this recruitment. He had a massive head start in pursuing and building a relationship with Strebig.

No blame or shade should be thrown toward the Wisconsin Badgers coaching staff. This one doesn’t appear to be on them or a result of their shortcomings, but the top in-state talents leaving the state is a trend that doesn’t seem to be letting up
