In the age of social media, the voices of athletes’ families can often carry a significant impact, both in amplifying the highs and vocalizing the lows of their loved ones’ careers. Recently, the brother of Wisconsin football junior wide receiver Keontez Lewis took to Twitter to express his displeasure regarding playing time allocation during the Washington State game.

After playing 409 snaps as a starter for the Badgers last season, Lewis fell down the WR pecking order after Wisconsin made offseason transfer portal additions of Bryson Green, Will Pauling, and C.J. Williams.

In week one against Buffalo, Lewis played just six snaps. But he never saw the field in the 31-22 loss to Washington State in week two, which led to his brother sharing some interesting thoughts about the coaching staff.

Keontez Lewis Brother Throws Shade at Wisconsin Football Coaches

When a new coaching staff takes over, there will always be the question of whether they will play “my guy” or the “inherited guy.”

The tweets from Keontez Lewis’s brother hinted at his frustration with the fact that Keontez was not getting as much playing time as some of the newcomers from the transfer portal.

While these tweets didn’t explicitly point fingers, he seems to imply that C.J. Williams is the player Wisconsin football coaches are playing over his brother for reasons outside of on-field performance.

One tweet, in particular, alluded to potential NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) implications. The idea that NIL deals could influence playing time is a topic that has been discussed in college football circles since the advent of new regulations allowing student-athletes to profit from their personal brands.

He also implies that Keontez Lewis is being kept on the bench for “Pepsi sake,” further adding fuel to the C.J. Williams-specific shade because he’s a member of the Pepsi NIL team along with Braelon Allen, Tanner Mordecai, and Chimere Dike.

Wrapping Things Up

It’s important to note that these tweets can’t be proven as fact, but offer a unique perspective from a family member who cares deeply about Keontez Lewis, his on-field success, and well-being. However, they also serve as a reminder of the complexities surrounding college football today, where talent acquisition, playing time, and off-field opportunities are all interwoven.

From the standpoint of Wisconsin football, the team’s coaching staff faces the challenge of managing a roster brimming with talent while striving to create a cohesive and successful unit on the field. This involves making tough decisions about playing time, which can be influenced by factors ranging from performance in practice to game matchup dynamics.

While it’s natural for family members to advocate for their loved ones, it’s also crucial to remember that decisions about playing time and team composition ultimately rest with the coaching staff. The competition for positions on the field is a testament to the depth and talent of the Wisconsin football program.

As the season progresses, it will be intriguing to see how Keontez Lewis & role within the team evolves. Will his performance on the field earn him more opportunities, or will the newcomers from the transfer portal continue to shine?

The dynamics of college football are ever-changing, and the story of Keontez Lewis serves as a reminder of the multifaceted nature of the sport, where family, competition, and opportunity intersect in intricate ways.
