We all know that in order to be a Division 1 football player, you need to be very athletically gifted. The Wisconsin football team is loaded with them. But then again, so are the other 132 FBS football teams at that level. But then there are those who are much more athletically gifted than the rest.

We, in the athletic community, refer to these uber-athletes as ‘freaks.’ It may sound harsh or negative, but in sports, it’s a big compliment.

Every year, The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman collects all of the freaks, ranks them, and releases a list of the top 100 freaks in all of college football. Last year, the Badgers had a whopping four Wisconsin football players on Feldman’s list. It included Braelon Allen (18), Joe Tippmann (28), Isaiah Mullens (58), and Andy Vujnovich (80).

This year, the lone Badger on the freak list is Braelon Allen. Not only did the number of Badgers drop on the list from the previous year, but Allen dropped in the rankings from the 2022 list. He went from 18th in 2022 to 34th this year.

It’s interesting that he would fall in the rankings. Maybe the novelty of Allen has worn off because he isn’t an 18-year-old kid squatting an insane amount of weight. But in the article, Feldman says Allen has bulked up, adding 10 more pounds to his frame, reaching 245 lbs. But he’s also leaner. He went from 11 percent body fat to 8, and Allen says he is faster now.

It’s another feather in the cap of the Badgers junior running back. I know it feels like the Wisconsin football team always has a stud running back in the stables, but fans need to appreciate Allen while we have him. There’s a lot of excitement about the incoming freshman running backs in 2024, but there’s no guarantee they’ll be at the level Braelon Allen is.

Let’s sit back and enjoy one more year of Braelon Allen running the rock in Madison.
