Adding an experienced cornerback remains high on the list of things the Wisconsin Badgers football team wants to do in the portal this offseason.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Wisconsin Badgers officially offered a scholarship to UAB transfer portal cornerback Brian Mayes, which he announced on social media.

Since entering the transfer portal, Mayes has also received interest from Houston, Kentucky, TCU, Auburn, Arkansas, Memphis, Texas A&M, and Illinois. After beginning his career at Incarnate Word, he spent just one season at UAB and has one season of eligibility remaining.

It’s become abundantly clear that the Wisconsin football coaching staff wants to add another battle-tested cornerback into the mix, and Brian Mayes is a highly sought-after option that makes a lot of sense.

This past season, the 6-foot-1, 185-pound cornerback registered 41 tackles, 12 pass deflections, and two interceptions. Pro Football Focus gave him a 72.9 grade on the season and 77.8 in coverage.

Interestingly enough, Mayes has almost exclusively played boundary cornerback. The Wisconsin Badgers are expected to return Ricardo Hallman and Nyzier Fourqurean in 2024 while welcoming Michael Mack into the competition for playing time.

There are also plenty of young, talented internal options the Wisconsin football staff hopes to develop for the future, so this offer indicates they view Mayes as an upgrade over some of their available options.
