As Luke Fickell and the Wisconsin football team enter its bye week with a 3-1 record and a promising 1-0 start in the Big Ten, it’s an opportune moment to evaluate the Badgers offense’s performance under the guidance of new offensive coordinator Phil Longo and his air raid system.

Let’s explore some things we’ve learned or seen through the first four games before the Badgers return to the field against Rutgers in Week 6.

Wisconsin Football Has Made Larger Offensive Strides Than Given Credit For

The Badgers have turned up the heat in the scoring department under Phil Longo. Wisconsin football is churning out an average of 33.2 points per game, which lands them at a cool No. 4 spot in the Big Ten. That’s quite the jump from their 26.3 points per game average from the previous year, where they sat at a respectable No. 7 in the conference.

Let’s keep it real: even though the Badgers have upped their scoring game, they’re ranked 49th nationally. So, it’s safe to say Longo’s offense still has some gears to shift before it’s firing on all cylinders — which is why I’m coming around to how dangerous this system can/will become when this thing clicks.

Now, if we peek at their total offensive yards per game, things are looking up. Last year, the Wisconsin Badgers averaged 363.6 yards per game, finishing with the No. 8 spot in the Big Ten. They’ve kicked it up a notch this season, pushing the needle to 427.5 yards per game. Nationally, that’s at No. 46, and in the Big Ten, they’re sitting pretty at No. 4.

It clearly indicates that the Wisconsin football offense is evolving and heading in the right direction, even if prominent areas need cleaning up.

Overall, my big takeaways through the bye week are that Wisconsin football is scoring more, running the ball more efficiently, and turning the passing game into a viable option. If the Badgers can iron out a few kinks and execute their game plan effectively, their offense has the potential to really shine. But even if they don’t, it’s still a noteworthy improvement compared to last season.

Final Thoughts on the Wisconsin Football Offense Through 4 Weeks

Let’s break it down a bit. The Wisconsin football offense has been making strides, but they’re not firing on all cylinders just yet. The Badgers have had their fair share of hiccups, mainly in the form of procedural penalties that disrupt their rhythm and efficiency.

But the good far outweighs the bad. This season, the Badgers have managed to rack up over 400 yards of offense in three out of four games. That might not sound earth-shattering, but last year, they only pulled it off four times throughout the entire season. So, they’re definitely on the upswing, even if they’re not hitting the lofty goals everyone set for them.

The bye week offers a golden opportunity for Wisconsin football to look in the mirror and work on their issues.

To sum it up, Wisconsin Badgers football is making progress, and they have the potential to become a real offensive force in the Big Ten. With some fine-tuning and the proper adjustments, they can build on some of their early-season success and push for the Big Ten West title.
