Luke Fickell and the Wisconsin football coaching staff faced the difficult challenge of meshing the inherited defensive personnel’s skill sets with the scheme they intended to run with the Badgers.

Now, this offseason, the Badgers recruiting department has the opportunity to bring in a few players through the transfer portal whose athletic makeup and versatility better fit that scheme.

The newest name that has emerged on the Wisconsin Badgers radar is Syracuse linebacker Leon Lowery Jr. — who recently entered the portal and has two years remaining eligibility. He picked up an offer on Friday.

Houston, Oregon State, Georgia Tech, and Baylor are also in the mix.

Wisconsin Football Expressing Interest in Syracuse Transfer LB

Leon Lowery Jr. is a New Jersey native who could be an intriguing fit for the Wisconsin football team’s defense as they move towards more athletic, versatile, and multiple fronts.

The 6-foot-4, 240-pound linebacker has appeared in 30 games for Syracuse, registering 75 tackles, 5.0 sacks, and two pass deflections. This past season, he tallied 46 tackles, 16 pressures, 3.5 sacks, and a PD.

According to Pro Football Focus, Lowery Jr. played 523 total snaps and finished with a 54.8 grade (average). A more interesting note on the pass-rusher is that of those 523 snaps, he played 337 at outside linebacker and also saw time on the defensive line.

With C.J. Goetz having exhausted his eligibility and very few Badgers pass-rushers seeing the field for Wisconsin football this season, this is a position group that you can almost guarantee will see a few players added this offseason.

As it stands, the only known transfer portal EDGE rusher the Wisconsin Badgers have lined up a visit with is Hillsdale College standout Riley Tolsma.
