It is a day I knew was coming but still makes me sad. Austin Gomez has announced his decision to transfer to Michigan. While I am sad he is not still a apart of the Wisconsin Badgers wrestling program, I am extremely excited to follow the next chapter of his wrestling journey. Gomez has one year of eligibility remaining.

The 2022 149 pound Big Ten Champion for the Wisconsin Badgers was a Co-Captain and stalwart for the Wisconsin Badgers.

The Wolverines are not only getting an outstanding wrestler, they are getting an outstanding human being.

What Is Michigan Getting in the Former 149 pound Wisconsin Badgers Wrestling Champion?

The Wolverines are getting a disciplined veteran in the room and one of the better wrestlers to come out of the Wisconsin Badgers Wrestling program in the last decade. As I documented this fall in my 2023-2024 roster preview, this certified DAWG would be missed.

Some of the honors and awards Austin brings to Ann Arbor;

  • Qualifier for NCAA Championships (149 pounds)
  • 2023 Academic All–Big Ten
  • NCAA and Big Ten Wrestler of the Week
  • USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week
  • 2022 Mexico Grand Prix All-Star Champion (70 Kilograms)
  • 2022 NCAA All–American (149 pounds)
  • 4th Place at 2022 NCAA Championships (149 pounds)
  • 2022 Big Ten Co–Outstanding Wrestler of the Championships
  • 2022 Big Ten Champion (149 pounds)
  • 2019 NCAA Qualifier (149 pounds)
  • 3rd place at 2019 Big 12 Championship (149 pounds)
  • 2018 Junior World Team Qualifier

Thank You for the Memories, Austin!

I can probably think of far too many memories to document coherently, but coincidentally both of my favorite Wisconsin Badgers memories took place against one of the best wrestlers on the planet, Yianni Diakomihalis.

First, in 2022 at the UW Field House, Gomez was defeated but it was my sons first dual and had the opportunity to meet his first favorite wrestler. As a parent, this is still a memory I think of often and will always have.

On a less sentimental note, Gomez’s 9–3 upset win on the road vs. No. 1 Yianni Diakomihalis in 2022 was incredible!  By beating Diakomihalis, he handed the three-time NCAA Champion, three-time World Champion, and World Silver Medalist just his second loss of his collegiate career.

Good luck at Michigan. You earned everything you have received for the Wisconsin Badgers and Mexican National team and it was an absolute pleasure to watch you work.

¡Gracias por todo, Austin!

You will forever be a Badger. On Wisconsin!
