It hasn’t been all sunshine and roses for former Wisconsin Badgers guard Johnny Davis since he declared for the draft after his sophomore season and became an NBA lottery pick.

The first NBA Draft selection of the Greg Gard era, who went 10th overall to the Washington Wizards, was assigned to the Capital City Go-Go on Tuesday afternoon following a slow start to the season.

The 6-foot-5 wing, still just 21 years old, has appeared in 18 games for the Wizards so far this season. Davis is averaging 2.5 points, 1.1 rebounds, and 0.4 steals per game on 43.8% shooting from the floor in roughly eight minutes a contest for head coach Wes Unseld Jr.

With no clear spot in the rotation available, Davis will head to the G-League to regain his confidence and continue refining his game.

Johnny Davis had a dominant sophomore season for the Wisconsin Badgers, winning Big Ten Player of the Year and earning consensus All-American honors after averaging 19.7 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game on 42.7% shooting from the field.

He displayed promise as a two-way prospect and did the only sensible thing, striking while the iron was hot and leaving school early.

Even though the Washington Wizards are one of the worst teams in the Eastern Conference, Davis hasn’t been able to carve out a role.

It also doesn’t help that the depth chart is crowded on the wing with Jordan Poole, first-round picks Bilal Coulibaly and Corey Kispert, and veteran guard Landry Shamet getting most of the minutes.

Johnny Davis had a nice summer league showing this past season, averaging 16.3 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 1.5 steals on 42.9% shooting from beyond the arc. However, it has yet to translate.

Here’s to hoping the former Wisconsin Badgers star can regroup and find his way in the NBA because shelf lives in the association don’t last very long when you’re not producing.
