Wisconsin Badgers head basketball coach Greg Gard and the team could be one step closer to a core member of the rotation returning.

Junior point guard Kamari McGee, who has been out since suffering a toe injury in a 91-79 win over Indiana on January 19, returned to practice.

“It began like midway through last week,” McGee told reporters regarding when he regained his strength. “I started doing a little bit of some agility work, and I started getting in here and doing some individual workouts to get my feel and my rhythm back.”

Kamari McGee Could Provide the Spark Wisconsin Basketball Needs

A lot has changed for the Wisconsin basketball team since McGee was sidelined for the Badgers with a lower-body injury.

The Wisconsin Badgers were 14-4 overall and 6-1 in conference play, looking like legit contenders in the Big Ten. Since then, the team has spiraled — going 4-7 during his 11-game absence.

McGee, a Racine native, averaged 1.4 points, 0.8 rebounds, 0.4 assists, and 0.7 steals in 6.8 minutes per game before getting hurt. But he was a spark plug and much-needed defensive presence.

“Having a guy like that that can come off the bench and spark life into us… that’s a credit to Kam,” Gard told reporters. “He works, keeps his head down, doesn’t let the naysayers get to him or whatever the outside noise says. He’s a really focused individual, and I’m super proud of him, the way he’s handled himself this the whole year.”

At this point, McGee’s status is unknown for the Wisconsin basketball team’s matchup against Rutgers on Thursday, but there’s no denying the Badgers players logging heavy minutes will be happy to see him back in the lineup if/when the time comes.
