Outside linebacker Aaron Witt is still dealing with a lingering foot injury he initially suffered during spring camp in 2021 and has not been able to play or practice since.

It’s been over 900 days and counting since once-promising outside linebacker Aaron Witt played for the Wisconsin football program in the storied Dukes Mayo Bowl of 2020.

After playing just 11 snaps on defense during the regular season, Witt got an extended look in the Badgers finale against Wake Forest. The 6-foot-6, 250-pound pass rusher played 26 snaps and registered 2.0 TFLs, 2.0 pressures, one sack, and a forced fumble — showing flashes of another potentially dominant outside linebacker prospect for Wisconsin.

Overall, he played in five games as a true freshman totaling three tackles, two TFLs, two pressures, one sack, and a forced fumble.

Since then, Witt’s been dealing with a nagging right leg injury that’s kept him out since the spring of 2021, and after Wisconsin football coach Luke Fickell provided an update at Big Ten Media Days, it doesn’t sound like he’s going to be an option anytime soon.

After receiving an update from Wisconsin football outside linebackers coach Matt Mitchell in the spring that said he was still battling an injury and didn’t expect him to participate in spring ball — the newest update isn’t any more encouraging.

According to a report from Zach Heilprin, Fickell stated he expects to have most of his guys when camp opens. He also said some guys might be limited, like Jake Renfro and Chris Brooks Jr. One guy that won’t practice is Aaron Witt – who will continue to rehab his foot injury.

This news is highly discouraging for myriad reasons. First and foremost, it’s tough to watch somebody struggle through an injury — so my prayers go out to Aaron Witt. He’s gone through so much to get back onto the field, and I hope he recovers from both the physical anguish and the mental gymnastics he has to perform to keep a positive attitude.

Second, Witt is an immensely talented player who is long, strong, and physical that can rush the quarterback and set the edge — Wisconsin football could undoubtedly use someone with his talents.

However, the status of his playing career is uncertain at best. Nobody knows if Witt will be able to regain full health and return to the field. But he’s someone all Badgers football fans will be rooting for if he ever does.
