Greg Gard and Wisconsin Badgers basketball program have made their first known contact of the transfer portal season.

Joe Tipton of On3Sports reported that the Badgers have reached out to first-team All-Southern Conference forward Mikeal Brown Jones, who recently entered the transfer portal. Pitt, Miami, Arkansas, and Georgia have also made contact.

The 6-foot-8 forward averaged 18.9 points, 7.5 rebounds, 1.1 assists, and 0.9 blocks in 28 minutes per game and shot 54% from the field. Brown-Jones also connected on 43% of his shots from beyond the arc on 2.1 attempts per game.

The Philadelphia native, who began his career at VCU before transferring to UNC-Greensboro, has appeared in 113 career games, and will have one year of eligibility remaining as a grad transfer.

Why Mikeal Brown Jones Makes Sense for Wisconsin Basketball

Wisconsin basketball needs to find a physical one-year stop-gap option who could slot into Tyler Wahl’s role upon graduation. Mikeal Brown Jones fits that description and also adds the threat of outside shooting into the mix.

Brown Jones is coming off a season where he finished with a 121.6 ORTG and an impressive 4.5 PRPG, per Barttorvik, which would have been the best points above replacement per game on the Badgers this season.

According to HoopMath, Brown-Jones took 57.5% of his shots at the rim and finished at a 65.9% clip. He would give Wisconsin a much-needed stretch four to compliment Steven Crowl offensively.

Wisconsin basketball will need to add some proven depth in the frontcourt to offset the loss of Wahl this offseason. On paper, Nolan Winter, Carter Gilmore, Gus Yalden, and Markus Ilver are all expected to return, so pairing that group with an athletic rim-runner who is physical on the low block makes sense.
