Kamari McGee, the Wisconsin basketball team’s backup point guard, is on the road to recovery.

The Badgers’ guard announced that he’d be sidelined for the foreseeable future following successful surgery on his injured foot. The injury stemmed from an incident against Indiana. He missed a total of 11 games before making a return for the final seven games of the season.

“This past season tested me in new ways, and part of the journey included the adversity and setback of a foot injury suffered midway through the year,” McGee wrote on social media. “As a result, I recently underwent successful surgery.

“While the upcoming recovery and rehab will sideline me from playing basketball for the months ahead, I look forward to still being able to work out with my teammates and have the support of our coaches and staff this offseason. This is a necessary setback for a better comeback. I’m determined to work my way back onto the court, and I’m excited for what’s ahead.”

McGee, a Racine native, played in 25 games for Wisconsin basketball this past season. Off the bench, he averaged 2.1 points, 0.8 rebounds, and 0.5 steals in just over 8 minutes per game. Despite his modest role for the Badgers, McGee was a strong defensive presence and brought energy to both ends of the floor when Greg Gard needed it.

“Having a guy like that that can come off the bench and spark life into us… that’s a credit to Kam,” Gard told reporters. “He works, keeps his head down, doesn’t let the naysayers get to him or whatever the outside noise says. He’s a really focused individual, and I’m super proud of him, the way he’s handled himself this the whole year.”

Wisconsin basketball expects to have a strong backcourt rotation next season, led by returning starter Chucky Hepburn. In addition to McGee, the Badgers will have the highest-rated point guard recruit in program history, joining the mix when Daniel Freitag arrives this summer.
